WHAT IS COPPER SLAG?
Copper slag is a by-product created during the copper smelting and refining process. As refineries draw metal out of copper ore, they produce a large volume of non-metallic dust, soot, and rock. Collectively, these materials make up slag, which can be used for a surprising number of applications in the building and industrial fields.
(Excerpted from wiseGEEK)
Air-cooled copper slags have a black color and glassy* appearance. As a general rule, the specific gravity will vary with iron content...The unit weight of copper slag is somewhat higher than that of conventional aggregate.
(Excerpted from Publication Number: FHWA-RD-97-148)
* Please note that this glassy appearance results when the slag has been granulated with water. SHARPSHOT® gets its unique qualities by being ambient (air) cooled, and is dull - not glassy.
For ARTICLES on some of the applications for which copper slag is an ideal choice, and for specific details about SHARPSHOT® copper slag, refer to the SHARPSHOT® Technical Data Page in our LIBRARY.
UNDERWATER CUTTING

"Demand for decommissioning of platforms, pipelines and other subsea facilities has skyrocketed in the past few years with depletion of older oil fields and hurricane damaged areas." (Ranger Offshore)
Companies specializing in abandonment and decommissioning work have discovered that SHARPSHOT® 20x50 is an ideal product for their work. Many companies in the U.S. Gulf are already using SHARPSHOT® 20x50 for subsea structure removals.

SHARPSHOT® 20x50:
THE GENTLER, MORE COST-EFFECTIVE SOLUTION
Many companies use remote-controlled systems to dismantle oil rigs and other structures in deep water. The work they do often involves underwater abrasive waterjet cutting.
The abrasive is mixed with water under very high pressure to cut heavy steel structures.
For many years this kind of work was done with garnet or other expensive abrasives. Experience has shown that the hardness of the garnet often causes damage to expensive cutting equipment.
SHARPSHOT® 20x50 copper slag has several advantages over garnet: it is more cost-effective and it is gentler on equipment.
Companies using SHARPSHOT® 20x50 instead of garnet save on the cost of abrasives, and also save by suffering less wear and tear on their equipment.
