WHAT IS COPPER SLAG?
Copper slag is a by-product created during the copper smelting and refining process. As refineries draw metal out of copper ore, they produce a large volume of non-metallic dust, soot, and rock. Collectively, these materials make up slag, which can be used for a surprising number of applications in the building and industrial fields.
(Excerpted from wiseGEEK)
Air-cooled copper slags have a black color and glassy* appearance. As a general rule, the specific gravity will vary with iron content...The unit weight of copper slag is somewhat higher than that of conventional aggregate.
(Excerpted from Publication Number: FHWA-RD-97-148)
* Please note that this glassy appearance results when the slag has been granulated with water. SHARPSHOT® gets its unique qualities by being ambient (air) cooled, and is dull - not glassy.
For ARTICLES on some of the applications for which copper slag is an ideal choice, and for specific details about SHARPSHOT® copper slag, refer to the SHARPSHOT® Technical Data Page in our LIBRARY.
AIR BLASTING ABRASIVES

SHARPSHOT® has been a proven air blasting abrasive for over 25 years. It is an ambient cooled and crushed copper slag abrasive. The cooling and crushing process creates a hard, cubical, and aggressive abrasive.
Shipyards and contractors have relied on SHARPSHOT® for quality and cutting speed at a very competitive price, and it is now the preferred abrasive at many installations.
In tests run for NIOSH by an independent company, SHARPSHOT® was shown to be the best slag abrasive for cutting speed and cost per sq. ft.
SHARPSHOT® is a recycled copper slag abrasive that is environmentally friendly; it is low-dusting, contains very low levels of heavy metals (see MSDS) and is approved to be recycled into the manufacture of Portland cement.
SHARPSHOT® is a low-dusting abrasive containing less than 0.1% free silica.
SHARPSHOT® is available pre-blended with BLASTOX® for jobs involving lead-based paint.
SHARPSHOT® has been approved by CARB (California Air Resources Board) for dry unconfined outdoor abrasive blasting for over 25 years. Our proprietary air-wash system produces the cleanest low-dusting abrasive on the market.
SHARPSHOT® is approved by the U.S. Navy and listed on its qualified products list.
