WHAT IS COPPER SLAG?

Copper slag is a by-product created during the copper smelting and refining process. As refineries draw metal out of copper ore, they produce a large volume of non-metallic dust, soot, and rock. Collectively, these materials make up slag, which can be used for a surprising number of applications in the building and industrial fields.

(Excerpted from wiseGEEK)

Air-cooled copper slags have a black color and glassy* appearance. As a general rule, the specific gravity will vary with iron content...The unit weight of copper slag is somewhat higher than that of conventional aggregate.

(Excerped from Publication Number: FHWA-RD-97-148)

* Please note that this glassy appearance results when the slag has been granulated with water. SHARPSHOT® gets its unique qualities by being ambient (air) cooled, and is dull - not glassy.

For ARTICLES on some of the applications for which copper slag is an ideal choice, and for specific details about SHARPSHOT® copper slag, refer to the SHARPSHOT® Technical Data Page in our LIBRARY.

LEAD PAINT REMOVAL

Minerals Research & Recovery, Inc. (MR&R) is an authorized blender of  BLASTOX® , a "patented, granular, calcium-silicate based abrasive blasting additive used to stabilize lead in various industrial paints."

This product was created by THE TDJ GROUP, Inc. (An Environmental Solutions Provider) to deal with the problems associated with the removal of lead-based paint from steel structures.

When BLASTOX®  is correctly blended with an abrasive such as SHARPSHOT®,  the lead from the steel structure is encapsulated in the blended abrasive and rendered non-toxic. It can then be disposed of in "subtitle D landfill at significant savings."

Customers interested in this process should review the relevant documents in MR&R's LIBRARY and on the BLASTOX website "Lead Paint Abatement" page.
